First Letter of the hebrew alphabet. Alpha. The beginning. Aleph is also the first letter of the name of the first man ever created: Adam. Everything that happened to Adam in Eden happened to all of humanity in one shot. Adam sinned, the umbilical cord was cut, now all of humanity has this hole that is searching to be reconnected with God, to reconnect with the source of our very existence. This is where the story begins. Aleph. A Letter that has NO SOUND OF IT’S OWN. God is the one who gave us a sound, gave us a purpose, gave us a meaning. Our search begins with learning that meaning.
1 Our Lord, you bless everyone who lives right and obeys your Law.
2 You bless all of those who follow your commands from deep in their hearts
3 and who never do wrong or turn from you.
4 You have ordered us always to obey your teachings;
5 I don’t ever want to stray from your laws.
6 Thinking about your commands will keep me from doing some foolish thing.
7 I will do right and praise you by learning to respect your perfect laws.
8 I will obey all of them! Don’t turn your back on me.
This is one of my favorite passages of the bible. It means so much to me and I feel like it explains my whole understanding of what I feel the purpose of this life signifies. God said, “Let there be light.” meaning He gave up his word, like a seed that issued forth from within him, to be a light to the world. God loved the world so much that he gave this light to fill the emptiness, darkness and void that oppressed the world. By this simple action, God has changed everything. Even the fact that it was first Evening and then it became Morning completing one day has tremendous significance. The Heavier and Darker the Wickedness, the Bigger and Brighter the Righteousness. In the End God wins.
Despite this marvelous work that God has done, by giving us his Word as a light for our feet, we still turn away from God. Our whole head is sick, our whole heart is faint. Even those people that God has chosen ended up treating God like he’s not worth the time. Sin and wickedness pushed them away from God. But God always has a method to deal with us. First is Evening, but soon the Morning will come to purge our wickedness with the Light of His Glory.
Jesus Christ is that Light. Jesus Christ is that Savior. Not just for a specific nation, but for us all. Jesus Christ was crucified on a cross, whipped and nailed down by roman soldiers. Then right after the Gospels, we bump into the first theological Teachings of the Christian Faith, specifically written to the Romans. This is where that Light spreads to the entire world. It started with these foreign people from Rome. What do they have to do with some Jewish messiah? Little did they know that this man, Jesus Christ was going to utterly transform their lives inside out. The Second Adam, restoring us to our original purpose.
